“Public libraries have a role in documenting Queensland’s stories by capturing, preserving and making accessible local culture and history. They build local collections through collaborative projects that focus on unique historical and contemporary stories.” (VISION 2017 for Queensland Public Libraries, the strategic visioning statement for Queensland Public Libraries).

To this end, the Hinchinbrook Shire Library has developed a culturally significant Local History collection which reflects our unique heritage.

The collection includes books, photographs, oral histories, births, deaths, and marriages records, magazines, pamphlets, local newspapers, files, Council reports, ephemera; and anything relevant to the history of the Hinchinbrook Shire region.

All members of the public are welcome to browse the collection and use the quiet reading area of the Special Collections Room of the library for reading and research.

NOTE: The Local History collection is a Reference Collection ONLY. No material may be borrowed. However you are welcome to peruse within the room and photocopy some material.

Questions concerning the heritage of our district are received regularly. If you have an enquiry, please complete the Enquiry Form and email to [email protected]
